Eastern Province (Tamil: கிழக்கு மாகாணம் Sinhala: Negenahira Palata) is a province of Sri Lanka. Its capital is Trincomalee. The population is divided between Tamils, Sri Lankan Moors and Sinhalese. The Government of Sri Lanka had temporarily merged it with the Northern Province in 1987 to form a North-Eastern Province, but restored the two original provinces in 2007.
