A Community of interest is a community of people who share a common interest or passion. These people exchange ideas and thoughts about the given passion, but may know (or care) little about each other outside of this area. Participation in a community of interest can be compelling, entertaining and create a ‘sticky’ community where people return frequently and remain for extended periods. They sometimes cannot be easily defined by a particular geographical area.
On-line Communities of Interest (or Passion, rather) such as Dogster, Flickr, Cruiser Customizing are, some people believe, fascinating. They give people a place to go, to connect with other people about things that were interested in, passionate about, and love. Communities of passion are central to who some people think they are, and who such people believe they are are becoming. They provide a focal point for our attention and our hobbies. They give us opportunities to be delighted, entertained, and educated about those things that cajole us to take time away from the routines of our daily lives including our jobs, family, friends. Communities of passion create a sense of possibility. They inspire us to play. They allow us to lose track of time. Communities of passion appeal to our imaginations and our dreams. The best ones create a compelling and alternative world. Communities of passion are about discovery and exploration and creativity. They allow us to connect with other people, find new tools, stumble on new places, learn about and engage in activities or events, uncover humorous anecdotes or heartfelt truths. They allow us to express ourselves. And they let us buy cool stuff. The number of communities of practice is limited only by the range of human interests; the quality limited only by our creativity.
